Our Bilingual Education

Pioneering role

Already in the year 2000, as the first school in the Canton of Zurich, Lakeside School offered in a joint venture with the Freien Gymnasium Zürich (FGZ) a bilingual program called the Bilingual Middleschool Zurich (today it’s known as Freies Gymnasium Zürich) for the 7^th and 8^th grades. The Bilingual Middleschool was available to gymnasial as well as progymnasial children. With this program, Lakeside School and the Freien Gymnasium Zürich played a pioneering role in the area of bilingual education.

Current Educational Program

Together with the Freie Gymnasium Zürich (FGZ),Lakeside School offers a bilingual educational program starting with Kindergarten and continuing through to the Swiss Matura. The Lakeside School ends with 6^th grade, and for the 7^th and 8^th grades, the FGZ offers gymnasial classes with Latin or progymnasial classes without Latin. Children who are graduates from Lakeside School only need a recommendation from the school in order to be accepted into the program. In contrast to the public gymnasiums, in the 9^th – 12^th grades, FGZ offers four different bilingual Matura-profiles. In addition, the immersive lessons in the bilingual classes at FGZ are taught at a native-speaker level; therefore, requiring German and English proficiency. This clearly differs from the bilingual program offered by other schools at this academic level.
